What is resilience?

Resilience is the key…


Building your resilience will help to increase your sense of wellbeing and improve how you feel about people and situations. Resilience is all about our own ability to deal with situations – Particularly those which cause us stress or anxiety.



Here’s some other ways to describe resilience…


“The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.”


“When faced with a tragedy, natural disaster, health concern, relationship, work, or school problem, resilience is how well a person can adapt to the events in their life.”


The best news is that we can ALL improve our resilience!


We can work on ways to deal better with stressful, difficult or challenging situations…


This is something the SHARP Project is working on with young people across the UK.

Sometimes, we refer to resilience as our ability to ‘bounce-back’ or you may hear someone using the term “bouncebackability” – So how do we create ‘bouncebackability’?


Here’s some suggestions on simple things that will improve our resilience…


  • Having supportive relationships in your life with your family and friends seems to be an important foundation
  • Having a positive view of yourself
  • Having confidence in your strengths and abilities
  • Being able to regularly make realistic plans, and then being able to regularly carry them out
  • Being able to effectively and in a healthy manner manage your feelings and impulses.
  • Having really good communication skills – or you’re actively working to improve them
  • Having really good problem-solving skills – or you’re actively working to improve them

On a day to day basis we face challenges that the world we live in seems to throw at us whether it be from authority, family, friends or our own way of thinking. However as human beings we are provided with one powerful asset that enables us to change “the way life has always been” and that is….. choice.


When adversity strikes, whether it be loss of your job, an illness, a natural disaster or when you take a big hit that really knocks you off your feet for a while, how fast you get up again depends on a number of things, such as: how good your support network is; how solid your self-esteem is; the extent to which you believe that you can control your own destiny and your experiences at overcoming adversity in the past.


In the GR8 programme that we deliver to young people, we offer practical tips and imaginative techniques to stimulate your thinking and through this offer you the opportunity to manage your life yourself supported by those around you.
